![]() On September 28, 1937, Remington stopped the separate serial numbering for the 16-gauge The Sportsman at 215364 and from then on, they were serial numbered right along with the Model 11s. On August 24, 1937, Remington stopped the separate serial numbering for the 12-gauge The Sportsman at 515506 and from then on, they were serial numbered right along with the Model 11s. Model 11 12-gauge serial numbers continued the sequence began in 1905. The Model 11 20-gauge serial numbers began at 1000000 when introduced in 1930 and the 16-gauge Model 11 serial numbers began at 1500000 when introduced in 1931. Also, they began putting the one-bird roll-stamping on the Model 11 receivers and started marking "Model 11" on the bolts. Over time Remington reduced the roll-stamping to one bird on each side and moved "The Sportsman" from the left side of the receiver to the bolt. The Sportsman 12-gauge serial numbers began with S500000 and by the 505xxx range the S preface is gone. The 16-gauge The Sportsman serial numbers began with S200000 and like the 20s I see the S preface dropped by the 207xxx range. of the 20-gauge The Sportsman in the old factory ledger begins with 14199 being the highest serial number reached by March 1, 1937. By the 7xxx range the S preface was no longer being stamped on the guns. ![]() I believe the 20-gauge The Sportsman serial numbers began with S1, but the lowest serial number I've actually observed is S3223. Unfortunately, the first 20-gauge The Sportsman page is missing from the old factory ledger. Williamcprice wrote:I just recently purchased a Remington 1100 shotgun that has a serial number on the receiver that is "L79xxxxV". They resumed stamping the date code on the barrel on 10/1/01. They continued to mark the date code on the end flap of the shipping box. (*) On 8/9/99, stopped stamping the barrels with the date code. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above. Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer's rifle. Here is some information that you can get from you serial number after 1921
